Chapter 8 - Internet Explorer

This course assumes students are familiar with using a browser. Here are some tips that may be useful.

To expand or shrink the display:       This hides or displays the toolbars. Press F11.

To create a picture of the display screen:     Press the Print Screen key (next to F12 on most keyboards.) The image is stored on the clipboard. Now paste it into Word or another Office application. Select the image and modify it using the Format Menu, Picture submenu.

To create a picture of the active window:     Hold down ALT or Control and press the Print Screen key (next to F12 on most keyboards.) The image is stored on the clipboard. Now paste it into Word or another Office application. Select the image and modify it using the Format Menu, Picture submenu.

To copy a picture from a webpage:      Right-click on the picture.  Select Copy. Open an Office application and choose paste. Note: Pressing CTRL and  V is a shortcut method for pasting. 

To look for a word on a webpage:      Press Control and F.

To return to your home page:            Hold down Alt and Home.

To refresh the current webpage:       Press F5.

To open a link in a new window:        Press Shift when clicking on the link.

To move between viewed web pages:           Press Backspace or press ALT plus the left arrow to move backward.

Press ALT plus the right arrow to move forward.

To go to the top of a web page:          Press the Home key

To go to the end of a web page:         Press the End key

To quickly scroll in a web page:         Put the cursor in the scrollbar at the estimated location of where you want to be in the web page. Right click. Click on Scroll Here.

To quickly access a .com site:                       Type the words of the site’s name in the Address bar. Omit the http, www, and .com portions. Press CTRL+ENTER.

To search from the Address bar:       Type go, find, or ? followed by a word or phrase, and then press ENTER. Or, type Google and Press CTRL+ENTER.

To look up a definition:                      Type Define: in the address bar, followed by the word.

To copy a table from the web into Excel: Highlight the data and copy it. In Excel, choose an empty sheet. CTRL+A. Paste. Click Ok to clear the error message.

To remove formatting when pasting from a webpage into Word:    Use Paste Special and select an Unformatted or a Rich Text Format
