45th Annual
International Collegiate Business Strategy Competition
April 16-18, 2009

At the 45th Annual International Collegiate Business Strategy Competition, SJSU was represented by undergraduate and graduate teams from the College of Business.

When the remote phase of the competition began on February 2, SJSU was represented by two teams competing in separate divisions:

  • Appollean Sound (MBA): Mike Hentrich, James Manalad, Steven Moody, Nickie Rolle, Shariar Yaghoubi
  • Spartan Wireless (undergraduate): Jason Conte, Tra Huynh, Ronny Lai, Gabino Lopez, Jeff Sloan, Danielle Ynostroza

The 2009 competition concluded at at the Bahia Hotel in San Diego on April 18, 2009. At the end of the three day “intensive” phase in San Diego, both teams won a combination of awards.

Prof. Joel West of the Department of Organization & Management served as advisor and coach to both teams. In addition to Prof. West and the 11 students, San José State was also represented by two former SJSU team advisors, Dr. Abdel El-Shaeib and Dr. Stephen Achtenhagen, who served as volunteer judges for the competition.

Although participation was down due to the recession, the 45-year-old competition featured 18 teams from four states and Canada. The 2009 competition was hosted by the University of San Diego, School of Business Administration, and was previously hosted by SJSU, UNLV and the University of Nevada Reno.
