Competing among 24 teams from the US and two foreign countries, teams representing San José State’s College of Business won top prizes in the 47th Annual International Collegiate Business Strategy Competition — with three teams winning two firsts and a second place.

SJSU was represented by three teams (the most since 2006):

  • G_Input (MBA): Dan Duong, Adam Harlow, Chris Heuser, John Shippy, David Van Der Steen
  • Toys With Sol (MBA): Patrick Grogan, Christopher Heavingham, Casey Holland, Nafisa Jhaveri, Nghia Nguyen, Shaun Teacher
  • Tower Toys (undergraduate): Jason Lopez, Monikka O’Neil, Kevin (Phong) Tran, Michael Tran, Amon-Raa Valencia, Lakshmi Venkatesan

The three teams finished the remote phase of their competition in March, and completed the competition in April during the three day “intensive” phase at CSU Long Beach. At the end of the competition, all teams won awards for financial performance and written reports — with Toys With Sol and Tower Toys winning top performance awards — first place in their respective divisions — Toys With Sol and G_Input winning top report awards, and the remaining teams winning second place for the remaining rewards.

Prof. Joel West of the Department of Organization & Management served as advisor and coach to both teams. The teams were also supported by an appearance by Dr. Deborah Crown, associate dean for graduate studies at the College of Business. In addition, San José State was also represented by two former SJSU team advisors, Dr. Abdel El-Shaeib and Dr. Stephen Achtenhagen, who served as volunteer judges for other divisions of the competition.

After previously being hosted by the USD and SJSU, this year marks the first year of the competition being held at Cal State Long Beach. The competition was previously hosted by the University of San Diego, SJSU, UNLV and the University of Nevada Reno.
