Certification:

We have two study groups for students who want to graduate as a Microsoft Certified Professional. Since many companies require both a four year degree as well as Certification, participating in these study groups may signficiantly help your chances of finding work after you graduate.

The current study groups are:

  • System/Network Administration - this will will help students obtain an MCSA (Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator) and/or MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) level of certification.  This group meets room ENGR294 (2nd floor of the Engineering building.) Meetings are held starting on Monday, April 11th and every other Monday after that.
  • Software Development - this will will help students obtain an MCSD (Microsoft Certified Application Developer) and/or MCSD (Microsoft Certified Solution Developer) level of certification. This group meets every other Monday in room MH227 (2nd floor in MacQuarrie Hall) This room is actually managed by the Computer Science Club.  Meetings are held starting on Monday, April 18th and every other Monday after that.

We are already working on some other study groups, but will wait until we find out what does and doesn’t work well with these two before we start the next one.

Our goal is to make this as affordable as possible.  The required materials may be checked out from the various supporting groups (MIS Association, Computer Science Club, and/or Society of Computing Engineering.) provided you can pay the deposit.  When you return the book, your deposit will be refunded provided you have not marked or otherwise damaged the book.  Should you decide to keep the book, your deposit will be retained to pay for a future book. We are also working on discounts for the exams you will be required to take.

If you are interested but can’t participate right now, don’t despair.  The groups work on one subject until they take the respective exam. Then they start on a new topic.  In many cases, people can join the study group when they are starting a new topic.  Once all the topics have been covered, we will cycle back through them again.  So if you missed one topic the first time around, you can catch it the next time.

For more information on the various types of certification, here is a link to the Microsoft Certification site: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/default.asp

Because these are study groups, it will take some time for them to study all the materials required for each exam.  There are companies in the area that will provide training in a condensed, one week format. For information on these firms, go to http://www.microsoft.com/learning/training/find/findcourse.mspx.
