Thank you for signing up for the Challenge Exam.

Challenge Exam Information

You must be enrolled in a section of Bus4-091L to take the exam. Students enrolled in Section 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 or 13 take the exam on Saturday, January 26, 2008. Students enrolled Section 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12 take the exam on Saturday, February 2, 2008. If you need to take the exam on the alternate date, send email to Mike Splane: Splane_m@cob.sjsu.edu

The exam starts at 10:00AM in BBC 301. Expect to spend 2-3 hours completing the exam. Bring a valid picture ID. You will be using machines running Office 2003.

 The exam has 4 parts.

For Word, you will need to copy and paste a document and a picture from the internet into Word. You will be asked to make formatting changes. Then you will be asked to add some graphic elements.

For PowerPoint, you will be asked to create an original PowerPoint presentation. You will be provided with a list of elements to include in the presentation.

For Excel, you will build a small worksheet, containing formulas. You will have to write your own formulas. This is a minimum requirement to pass the exam. You will be able to view a sample of what the finished worksheet should look like.

After you have built the worksheet, you will be asked to create a chart, based on the worksheet data. You will be provided with a list of elements to include in the chart. You will be able to view a sample of what the finished chart should look like.

For the average person, the Word section takes about an hour to complete, the other three parts about 30 minutes each.

A score of 80 or higher (out of 100) is required to successfully challenge the class. Demonstrating the ability to write formulas in Excel, using cell references,  is also required to pass.  There is no penalty for failing the exam; simply attend the class. Students who pass the exam must stay enrolled in the course to receive credit, but do not have to attend any classes.

Good luck,

Mike Splane
