CAREER ADVICE ON SELECTING AN

AREA OF MANAGEMENT EMPHASIS

HIGH TECHNOLOGY

While choosing the Management Concentration prepares you to act in managerial or leadership roles in a wide variety of situations, it is a very general Business degree. You may want to consider using your three Management Electives to give yourself an area of management emphasis, which may be useful when you interview for jobs after graduation.

Due to the location of San Jose State University in the heart of Silicon Valley, many students choose careers in High Technology. There are a number of possible combinations of elective courses which could facilitate getting a job in a high-tech company.

Bus 163   Management Issues in High Technology Companies (senior standing) looks at a wide variety of management topics and functions and how they apply in the unique environment of high technology electronics, where change is rapid and the competition is fierce.

Bus 164   Strategies in High Technology Companies examines strategies for companies within high technology industries, focusing on how to anticipate, identify, and exploit such technological change for competitive advantage. Technological change creates opportunities for new industries and products, but at the same time renders obsolete existing company capabilities.

Bus 146 Project Management focuses on how to manage projects. This is a crucial activity in many functions within virtually all high-tech companies.

If you plan to become a high-tech entrepreneur or would like to work for a high-tech start-up, consider the advantages of taking Bus 181 Introduction to Entrepreneurship or Bus 182 Business Plans for New Ventures.

Bus 144 Supply Chain Management focuses on using the Internet to provide linkages to customers, suppliers, the customers’ customers, and the suppliers’ suppliers. Related courses include the following: Bus 141 Materials Management and Bus 142 Total Quality Management
