Silicon Graphics leads the way for Silicon Valley firms

WASHINGTON (AP) - Breaking down barriers to advancement by women offering tuition reimbursements for workers' children and providing on-site child care--those are the kinds of benefits that earned 100 firms a place on the Working Mothers magazine ninth annual list of the best companies for working mothers.

Silicon Graphics Inc. is the only Silicon Valley-based company named in the October issue, though other firms with large valley operations were represented, such as International Business Machines Corp., Mentor Graphics Corp. and Xerox.

SILICON GRAPHICS INC.

Silicon Graphics of Mountain View is the sole Silicon Valley company on Working Mother magazine's 1994 list of the 100 best companies for working mothers. According to the October issue:"Silicon Graphics continues to work at moving women up. The company started a career-development program for women engineers, put a woman on its board....and (promoted) 13 percent of female employees, compared with... 7 percent of men." Ratings are from one to five stars.
