Management Information Systems

MIS combines tech with business to get people the information they need to do their jobs better/faster/smarter. Information is the lifeblood of all organizations - now more than ever. They all need someone who understands business (programmers don't) and understands tech (managers don't). MIS professionals bring both together to deliver information solutions.

  FAQ

How does MIS fit into the College of Business at SJSU?

MIS Diagram

MIS "lives" in the space that intersects technology and business. We are housed in the College of Business where all undergraduates earn a BS in Business Administration. MIS is one of the concentrations that students select within that degree, just like Finance, Accounting or Marketing but MIS has its own department, found in BT 250, just off the elevator lobby. We invite you to stop by and learn more.

What kind of jobs are there in MIS? Haven't they all been outsourced to other countries?

MIS professionals work as systems analysts, project managers, systems administrators, etc., communicating directly with staff and management across the organization - challenging and stimulating jobs - and the interpersonal communication required means they can't be outsourced the way pure technical jobs like computer programming have been. Indeed, last year our MIS graduates had the highest salaries offered among all the business concentrations - higher than accounting, finance, marketing, management - all the rest. Our MIS grads are working at HP, Google, eBay & Cisco etc.

MIS department hires two new faculty for Fall 07

This fall the MIS department grows by two. Dr. Leslie Albert joins us from the University of Oklahoma, having just completed her PhD from this leading MIS research program. Another top MIS program, Texas Tech University, sends us one of their new graduates as well, Dr. Nitin Aggarwal. Both will be teaching our "intro to MIS course" for MIS students, 110A. We welcome these bright young minds to our faculty team and look forward to the energy and enthusiasm they bring to the program.

MIS Spring graduation convocation "best ever"

Last May the department's annual graduation convocation moved to a larger and more formal venue in the Barret Ballroom to recognize this milestone for nearly 60 MIS graduates. The College of Business deans, the MIS faculty and nearly 500 family and friends were on hand to celebrate this special day. The 2nd Annual MIS Distinguished Alumni Award went to Dan Avilla (class of 92), now an Enterprise Architect at HP. Dan delivered a heartfelt and inspiring address to add to this memorable event.

New and improved 110A

This fall will see the debut of a new and improved 110A, the MIS intro course that our students take in place of the business core course 188 taken by non-MIS students. The new version will feature new faculty, new content, and a fresh perspective starting with an intense, all-online, interactive MIS overview module from Harvard Business School. Then, students get a close-up look at information systems from the inside out with hands-on labs in application development, culminating in a mini web/database project. We hope the new version will give students a clearer understanding of the field and will better prepare them for later courses like the 119A practicum course and the 118W web-based computing elective, as well as their future careers.
