Course Description
:

Overall objective of the course is to introduce students to concepts, methods, technologies, and application of business intelligence in enterprise performance management and decision support. Hands-on introduction to some of the BI and related technologies is also provided.


Course Goals and Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the applications of BI in enterprise performance management and decision support.

  2. Understand the foundations and applications of BI, data mining, and other intelligent systems in managerial work.

  3. Learn essential BI enabling technologies: relational database concepts and methods including database design and entity-relationship (E-R) modeling, data normalization, and Structured Query Language (SQL).

  4. Understand data warehousing and online analytical processing (OLAP) concepts, including dimensional modeling, star and snowflake schemas, attribute hierarchies, metrics, and cubes.

  5. Learn about analyzing and reporting on OLAP data.

Dropping and Adding:

Assignments and Grading Policies:

The following course components (with their relative weights as shown) will be used to determine a student's grade in this course.

Homework assignments: 40%
Term paper/project: 10%
Midterm exam: 25%
Final exam:  25%

Homework assignments/projects: A number of homework assignments and a term paper/project will be given during the semester. Requirements and due dates will be announced in class and may also be posted in the learning management system, D2L.

Exams: Exams will contain questions based on material in the textbooks as well as other material such as exercises, handouts, and class discussions. Examples and types of questions will be discussed in class.
