Excel Formulas Assignment – Campus Life
© Mike Splane 2006
To prepare
for this assignment, first do the practice exercises:
www.cob.sjsu.edu/splane_m/FormulaPractice.htm
In this
assignment you will create your own formulas, based on everyday events most
students will experience. For help on creating formulas, read the last page of
this handout: www.cob.sjsu.edu/splane_m/ExcelFormulas.htm
Start by
downloading and opening the Campus Life workbook. Do not open the file directly from the internet. Save the file on your desktop first.
Then open it.

- Enter your name and section
number.
- Enter data into the blank
spaces in column B. You can make up your own data.
- Create formulas and enter them
in column C.
- Each formula should contain
cell references.
- For example in cell C43, type
= B33 - do
not enter a number.
- Only the formula in cell C13 should
contain a number (0.0825 or 8.25%).
- When you enter a formula in
column C, you may see the formula in both the cell and in the formula bar
above the worksheet. This is what I call “mirror” view. If you see a
formula in the formula bar and the cell shows a zero, displays a number,
or is blank, you are in what I call “flashcard” view.
- Switch between the two views
by simultaneously pressing CTRL and ~ on the keyboard.
- Check the math to be sure you
understand what is being calculated.
- With the worksheet in flashcard
view, change some of the data to see what happens.
- Return to mirror view. Click
and drag to make the first 3 columns narrower.
- Print the worksheet
- The Print settings should
already be correct
- The printer should be set to
“Portrait” style.
- Print the first three columns
only, starting with row 4.
- Select the printer setting
“fit to one page”.
- Turn in the hard copy of the
worksheet.*
