Excel Charts in Excel 2007

We will build a bar chart showing monthly food sales by category for 6 months.

  1. Use the mouse to select the cells in the range A5 to G7
  2. From the Insert Tab, Charts Group, Bar Category, select the 2D Type called Stacked Bar.
  3. Right click on the chart. Choose Move Chart. Place the chart in a new sheet. Name the sheet “FoodSales.” (Don’t include any spaces.)
  4. On the Design Tab, Select Data Category to open a dialog box. Click on the Edit option underneath the words “Horizontal Category Axis Labels.  Click on the icon in the textbox. Click on the Sales tab. Accent (Highlight with the mouse) the labels in cells A3 to G3. Press enter. Click OK twice.
  5. From the Layout Tab, Labels Group, choose Chart Title.  Select the above Chart option. Change the chart’s title to Food Sales. Add the words Java Juice to a second line in the title. Click in the background area.
  6. From the Layout Tab, Labels Group, choose Axis Titles. Insert a horizontal title for each axis.
  7. Click on each title and you can edit it in the formula bar. Label the horizontal axis as Revenues and the vertical axis as Months.
  8. Right click in the Revenues axis. Choose Font. Change the font size to 12.
  9. Right click in the chart background. Choose Font. Select a bold style with a 12-point font size.
  10. Right Click on the Revenues axis. Choose Format Axis. Under Axis Options, find the word Maximum. Change the setting to fixed and the number to 45000.
  11. Right Click on the Revenues axis. Choose Format Axis. Under Alignment,  enter a custom angle of 45 degrees.
  12. Right click on the Months Title. Choose Format Axis. Under Alignment, text direction, select Rotate Text 270 degrees.
  13. Select the legend.  From the Format Tab, Shape Styles Group, Shape Fill category, add a light green shading. From the Format Tab. Shape Styles Group, Shape Effects category, add an external shadow to the legend.
  14. Click and drag to move the legend to the lower right corner. Click and drag to make the legend taller.
  15. Select the plot area background. From the Format Tab, Shape Styles Group, Shape Fill Category, select Gradient. Alternately, you can right click on the chart and select Format Plot Area and Gradient Fill. Click on the pull-down arrow for preset gradients. Select Daybreak, the fourth style in row 1.
  16. Change the gradient format by changing the Type and Direction settings.
  17. Now change the gradient colors, by changing the Gradient Stop settings. There are four stops, chosen from a pull-down box. You can add or remove stops.
  18. Select the chart background.  From the Format Tab, Shape Styles Group, Shape Fill category, add a light yellow shading.
  19. Add graphic elements from the Insert Tab, Illustrations Group or Text Group.

Save your chart – Press F12
