WORK
EXPERIENCE:
Instructor
Hired in
the spring of 2002 to teach an existing course in Microsoft Office
applications, I found the class wasn’t meeting student needs so I redesigned
its content and focus. My skills as an instructor have gotten steadily better
and the students really enjoy the new course. I work at creating a fun and
comfortable environment for them to learn. Their comments and ratings show how
effective my approach has been; I’m the highest rated professor in my
department.
Controller The Plaza Suites – Silicon Valley 1993-2004
Oversaw
all accounting and payroll functions, established new accounting systems,
prepared budgets, and enforced fiscal controls. Installed a new operations
software system and a new payroll system. Served as key member of a strong
management team for an award-winning hotel, including Quality Inns national “Hotel of the Year” award in 1995.
Controller Radisson -
My most
challenging assignment, I had to repair and rebuild an entire accounting
system. Restructuring sales incentives worked well, increasing revenues by 50%
annually. Installing new systems reduced the administrative costs of three
unions and four health plans. Setting up a POS system in the restaurant reduced
order-processing time and improved sales volume by 30%. Tightening of inventory
controls to cut waste improved profitability by 10%. Establishing new internal control systems
eliminated the substantial fees previously paid to outside accountants.
Controller Biltmore Hotel – Santa Clara 1991-1992
Highlights
included hiring and training a completely new accounting staff. The hotel was
sold and I managed the transitional accounting procedures. Trained F&B
managers in pricing, purchasing, inventory management, and cost-control
procedures.
Controller Sheraton Hotel -
Highlights
included suggesting a new marketing approach that generated modest revenue
gains, working on the team that negotiated union contracts, computerizing
inventory control systems in both the Purchasing and the Food & Beverage
departments.
