Joel West: A Brief Biography 

Since August 2002, Dr. Joel West has been on the faculty of the Department of Organization and Management in the College of Business at San José State University, where today he is associate professor of innovation & entrepreneurship.

Research

His research focuses technological innovation, entrepreneurship and IT firm strategies. He is best known for his firms strategies related to openness in innovation, product compatibility standards and open source software.

This research has been published in Asian Survey, Information Systems Research, Management International Review, Research Policy, Telecommunications Policy and The Information Society, among other journals. He has won best paper awards for tracks of the Academy of Management and HICSS conferences, and has been active in service to the research community.

Academic and Professional Experience

His teaching focuses on strategies for innovation and entrepreneurship. He has taught graduate courses in technology strategy and entrepreneurship, both at San José State (Business 281,283) and earlier at U. C. Irvine. As part of developing this course, he wrote new cases on standards competition and intellectual property rights, which have been published and adopted at “top 25” business schools. At SJSU, he also teaches the capstone undergraduate business strategy class (Business 189), and before SJSU he also taught international business and management information systems at early schools.

At SJSU, Dr. West is co-founder of the Silicon Valley Open Source Research Project and is a board member of the Silicon Valley Center for Entrepreneurship. He remains active in the Silicon Valley I.T. community, and provides ongoing commentary in his “Open IT Strategies” blog.

He earned a Ph.D. in management from the University of California, Irvine. Prior to receiving his Ph.D., he had more than 20 years’ experience as an engineer, manager and entrepreneur in the computer industry, including 15 years (1987-2002) as president of Palomar Software. He has also worked as a reporter, photographer, author and consultant. He received his S.B. degree from M.I.T. His hobbies include water sports, photography and music. He lives in San José with his wife and daughter.
