Getting an E-mail Account

It is impossible to say that you are ready for a career in Silicon Valley if you don’t understand how to use e-mail, and do so on a regular basis.

All students in Professor West’s classes are required to have and use an e-mail account. This can be

a webmail account, in which the mail is stored on a remote server and accessed fromfrom any computer using a web browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape;
an e-mail account using POP mail servers in which you run an e-mail application such as Eudora or Outlook Express on your local machine; most of these now support IMAP servers (but the differences are not important for class purposes).

SJSU provides free e-mail accounts of both types.

Client Software

If you wish to store copies of your e-mail on your local hard disk, and you are proficient in computer software installaration, then you may wish to set up your computer to use a POP or IMAP-based mail server.

College of Business

Even if you don’t have a PC or Internet access at home, the College of Business has several computer labs where you can access your webmail-based e-mail accounts, either those from SJSU or third party providers.

UCT Accounts

Free e-mail accounts are available to any SJSU student from University Computing and Telecommunications.

UCT supports a number of e-mail clients, such as Microsoft Outlook Express, Netscape Messenger, Qualcomm Eudora. It also provides a webmail acccess logon.

Web-based Email

Many other companies provide “free” (i.e. advertiser-supported) web-based e-mail. Among the leading Silicon Valley providers are:
